BNP ready to sign July Charter anytime
BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the party is ready to sign the July Charter at any time. He made the remarks at a press conference held at his house in Gulshan on Monday.
Salahuddin stated that after receiving the July Charter, the BNP responded with some amendments on the 30th of the same month. He claimed that the party has extended full cooperation towards its implementation.
“The July Declaration carries historical and political significance,” he said. “BNP had already responded to the proposals in the declaration back in February. However, the party opposed the way March 26 was proposed to be presented and expressed its disagreement. Moreover, BNP believes that state and constitutional recognition should be granted through the Fourth Schedule.”
He added that if BNP's proposed amendments to the July declaration are not accepted, the party will give its formal reaction after the declaration is read out.
Addressing concerns about BNP’s commitment to the charter and allegations that the party may refrain from signing without firm assurances, Salahuddin said, “BNP has provided full cooperation. We urge all to remain united in the fight against fascism.”
He also informed that discussions had been held on 19 core issues within the Consensus and Reform Commission, with BNP recording a note of dissent on seven and agreeing on twelve.
Salahuddin further remarked that the party has not yet received any official invitation to the July Declaration event scheduled to be held on Manik Mia Avenue.
