CAO writes to EC to hold elections before Ramadan

The Chief Adviser’s Office has formally written to the Election Commission requesting that all preparations for the national elections be completed ahead of Ramadan in February 2026.

This letter marks the official completion of the government’s procedural request to the Election Commission to conduct the polls within the specified timeframe.

Speaking on Wednesday, August 6, Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, confirmed the development.

He said that Principal Secretary to the Chief Adviser, M Siraj Uddin Mia, had sent a letter to Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, urging the Commission to take necessary steps to ensure the holding of free, fair, peaceful, and celebratory national elections of the highest standard within the set deadline.

The move follows an address to the nation by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on August 5, the day marking the July Uprising.

In his speech, Yunus announced his intention to formally request the Election Commission to schedule the elections before the onset of Ramadan in February 2026. Today’s letter is a continuation of that commitment.

The letter referenced the Chief Adviser’s national address, noting that he had already initiated comprehensive preparations and institutional arrangements to ensure the successful conduct of the upcoming polls.

It highlighted his emphasis on creating conditions so that the next election would be remembered as a moment of great national joy and celebration – particularly significant given that citizens have been unable to vote over the past fifteen years.

In his speech, the Chief Adviser expressed the hope that the election would be unforgettable for all the right reasons: marked by peace, order, high voter turnout, goodwill, and sincerity. The letter also underscored the importance of leveraging appropriate technology in election management and reaffirmed the interim government’s full support for the Election Commission in delivering a free, fair, peaceful, and festive electoral process.
