Govt pledges swift justice over attack on Nur, vows thwarting attempts to foil polls

The Interim Government of Bangladesh has issued a strong statement condemning Friday’s attack on Nurul Haque Nur, president of the Gono Odhikar Parishad and a leading figure in the July Uprising, calling the assault a direct attack on the spirit of the democratic movement.

In a formal statement released today, the Interim Government denounced the violence as “heinous and unacceptable,” reaffirming its commitment to deliver swift and transparent justice. “No individual, regardless of influence or position, will be spared from accountability,” the statement read. “Justice will be served without delay.”

Nur, a prominent student leader during the 2018 anti-quota protests and a key mobiliser in the July Uprising, was injured in the attack, along with several members of his party. The government has immediately constituted a specialised medical board to oversee their treatment. If required, Nur and the injured will be airlifted abroad for advanced medical care at state expense.

“The nation stands in solidarity with Mr. Nur and the families of the injured during this difficult time,” the statement said. “His courage and sacrifices during the struggle for democracy are etched in our national memory.”

The Interim Government also highlighted Nur’s historic role in challenging authoritarian rule, particularly under the previous regime led by Sheikh Hasina, noting his arrest and torture during the uprising as emblematic of the people’s fight for justice and democratic rights.

Calling for unity among all forces that participated in the July Uprising, the government stressed that solidarity is crucial to safeguarding the democratic gains achieved through popular struggle. “We must remain united against any conspiracy to undermine the people’s mandate,” it said.

Crucially, the statement reaffirmed the Interim Government’s firm commitment to holding national elections on schedule. “The national election will be held on time, in the first half of February 2026,” the government declared. “This is our solemn promise to the people of Bangladesh.”

It warned that any attempts to delay, obstruct, or derail the electoral process would be met with firm resistance. “The people’s will shall prevail. No force, however dark, will be allowed to stop our march toward democracy.”
