Juba League leader detained for hurling eggs at Akhter in NY
New York Police have detained Juba League leader Mizanur Rahman for hurling eggs at Akhter Hossen, member secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
He was detained on Monday night (New York local time) in front of Nabanna Restaurant in Jackson Heights. Police identified, surrounded, questioned, and handcuffed him before taking him into custody.
Earlier, Awami League leaders and activists had hurled eggs at Akhter when he arrived at the airport Monday afternoon as part of the delegation led by Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who was attending the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Sources said an Emirates flight carrying the Chief Adviser and his entourage landed at the airport on Monday afternoon. After some delay in exiting, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP acting chairman’s foreign affairs adviser Humayun Kabir, NCP leader Akhter Hossen, and NCP senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara were confronted by slogans from Awami League activists.
Security personnel from the Chief Adviser’s press wing, along with several BNP activists, attempted to escort them safely. At that point, several Awami League and Juba League activists hurled eggs at Akhter Hossen and shouted obscene remarks at Tasnim Jara. In protest, Akhter chanted, “Inquilab Zindabad.” Later, with police assistance, the delegation members left the airport by car.
