CEC unable to trace legitimate owner for plough symbol

Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin has said he is unable to identify a legitimate owner for the “plough” election symbol, as multiple factions claiming to represent the Jatiya Party have submitted separate applications for it.

Speaking to journalists at Nirbhaya Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Thursday, September 25, the CEC responded to questions about whether the Jatiya Party would be invited to the upcoming political party dialogue.

“I have received five proposals from groups calling themselves the Jatiya Party,” he said. “I don’t know how many you’ve heard of—but frankly, I’m not sure which Jatiya Party you’re referring to.”

When asked who would ultimately be granted the plough symbol, the CEC reiterated the confusion surrounding the party’s identity.

“There are multiple claimants for the plough,” he explained. “Let time pass, and you will see how it unfolds. I’m a bit puzzled myself whenever someone mentions ‘Jatiya Party’—there are at least half a dozen groups submitting proposals. With so many competing claims, it’s difficult to determine who should rightfully receive the symbol.”
