An unidentified group of assailants shot dead a man in Sarafbhata Union of South Rangunia in Chattogram on Thursday night.

The deceased, Abdul Mannan, 42, was the vice-president of the union unit of the Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal and the son of Nazer Ahmed from the area adjacent to Jilani Madrasa in West Sarafbhata.

The incident took place around 10pm in the Bulainner Bari Tek area of Ward No. 6 of the union.

According to local sources, after evening, while Abdul Mannan was passing through the East Sarafbhata area on a motorcycle, unidentified assailants opened fire at him. He collapsed on the ground after being shot. Locals rescued him and rushed him to the Rangunia Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Tension spread in the area following the incident. Upon receiving the news, police from Rangunia Police Station went to the spot, and additional forces were deployed in the surrounding areas.

Selim Sabbir, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rangunia Police Station, said police immediately recovered the body after being informed. “Initial investigation suggests that the killing may have been carried out due to previous enmity. The investigation is ongoing, and those involved will be identified and brought under the law,” he added.

On 21 September, a man named Rahmatullah was killed in Shikdarpara of the same union over a trivial dispute. Locals say that multiple murders within a short period have raised serious concerns about the growing crime trend in the South Rangunia Sarafbhata area.
