44 activists of banned BCL held in Cumilla

Police have detained 44 leaders and activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Cumilla in the early hours of Sunday, November 16.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance), Rashedul Haque Chowdhury, said 29 individuals were arrested from different areas in the city, including Tomsom Bridge, Jhautala and Badurtala areas. Besides, 15 people were arrested during drives in several upazilas of the district.

Officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model police station, Mohinul Islam, said leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League were preparing for a flash procession in Tomsom Bridge area of the city around 6:00am.

Being informed, police rushed to the area and arrested 29 people from Tomsom Bridge, Jhautala and Badurtala areas. Banners, sticks and lighters were seized from them.

The police action comes amid heightened security measures in the region, as authorities continue to clamp down on activities associated with banned organisations.
