Tarique’s return not a factor for elections: Touhid
Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain has said there is no reason to assume that the upcoming national election will be postponed or canceled if BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman does not return to the country.
He made the remark on Monday (November 30) while speaking at a discussion titled ‘Bangladesh’s Foreign Policy: Defining a Relevant Role in a Changing World’ organised by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at the National Press Club.
Responding to questions from journalists regarding uncertainty surrounding Tarique Rahman’s return ahead of the polls, the adviser said, “I don’t think it is correct to assume that if Tarique Rahman does not return, elections won’t happen or won’t be fair. I don’t see any reason to think that the polls will be halted in the absence of one person. Let’s wait and see what happens.”
Despite BNP leaders repeatedly signaling that Tarique may soon return, doubts have grown within political circles as the BNP leader himself recently spoke of obstacles preventing his return.
Touhid Hossain said the government has no objection regarding Tarique Rahman’s entry into the country if he chooses to return.
“If Tarique Rahman wants to come back, a travel pass can be issued in a day. There is no barrier from the government side,” he added.
Speaking about the health condition of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, the foreign affairs adviser said she is currently too ill to be transferred abroad for treatment.
“She is very sick. Right now, she is not in a condition to be taken out of the country. If her condition improves and the party formally requests, the government will consider it. Whatever support is necessary is being provided,” he said.
