BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is currently not a registered voter, although voter registration is mandatory for contesting or casting a vote in the Jatiya Sangsad elections.

However, he can still be enrolled if the Election Commission (EC) decides, said EC Secretary Md Akhtaruzzaman.

Speaking to reporters at the Election Bhaban on Monday, the EC Secretary said, “As far as I know, Tarique Rahman has not yet become a voter. But if the Commission wants, he can be registered.”

When asked whether Tarique Rahman could apply for voter registration even after the election schedule has been announced, the secretary said the provision applies to all citizens.

“Anyone can become a voter. Why are you only talking about Tarique Rahman? If he applies, he can be enrolled. There are laws and procedures of the commission regarding this,” he added.

Tarique Rahman has been living in London for several years.
