Govt’s stance clear, no chance for AL to contest polls: Shafiqul
Iterating the government’s firm stance on the Awami League’s chance to contest elections, the chief advisers press secretary, Shafiqul Alam, on Wednesday said the party will not be able to participate in the upcoming national elections.
“The government’s position on the Awami League is very clear. The party’s activities are banned, and the Election Commission has scrapped its registration, effectively excluding it from the electoral process,” Shafiqul Alam told reporters.
He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists at a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road in the capital on December 24.
Asked about reports that five US lawmakers had written to the chief adviser expressing concern over the ban on the Awami League and restrictions on its political activities, the press secretary said he was unaware of such correspondence.
“I have not seen any such letter. I do not know about it and have no information in this regard,” he added.
