Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, former adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, has joined the National Citizens Party (NCP) and will serve as its spokesperson. He has also decided not to contest the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections.

The announcement was made by NCP Convener Nahid Islam at a press conference held at the party’s temporary office in Bangla Motor, Dhaka, on Monday (December 29) evening.

Nahid Islam said an emergency meeting of the NCP’s political council earlier in the day decided to appoint Asif Mahmud as the party’s spokesperson. “Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan has formally joined the NCP. Although he will not participate in the elections, he will play a key role in our campaign as the head of the election team,” he said.

Asif Mahmud recently resigned from the interim government. Following his resignation, he had purchased a nomination form for the Dhaka-10 constituency but later withdrew from the race.

Reiterating the party’s stance, Nahid Islam said the NCP is now fully focused on election preparations. “We took this decision at an emergency online meeting of the political council. Asif Mahmud’s experience and organisational role will strengthen our election efforts,” he added.

Speaking at the press conference, Asif Mahmud said the decision to join the NCP was driven by a broader political responsibility. “Today is an important day for me. At this moment, it is crucial to keep the forces of the uprising united,” he said. “I have joined the NCP to help realise the aspirations of July.”
