Unknown assailants gunned down BNP leader Alamgir Hossain, 55, in Shankarpur area of Jashore town on Saturday evening.

The shooting took place around 7:00pm in front of former councillor Nayan’s office in Shankarpur. Alamgir was a former joint general secretary of BNP’s Ward 7 unit under Jashore Municipality and a resident of the Shankarpur Ishaq Road area. He was the son of the late Intaz Ali Chowdhury.

According to local residents and police, Alamgir was in the area in the evening when an unidentified group of gunmen suddenly opened fire on him. He was hit on the left side of his head and collapsed on the spot. Hearing the gunshots, locals rushed to the scene as the attackers fled.

Alamgir was taken to the emergency department of Jashore General Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead. Hospital sources said he had died before reaching the facility due to a direct gunshot wound to the head.

Following the incident, BNP’s Khulna divisional acting organising secretary and Jashore-3 constituency candidate Anindya Islam Amit rushed to the hospital. Condemning the killing, he alleged that BNP leaders and activists were being targeted in a planned manner, both during the previous Awami League government and under the current administration.

“Political violence of this kind is unacceptable in any form,” Amit said, demanding the immediate identification, arrest, and exemplary punishment of those responsible.

Local sources said Alamgir was also involved in the land and plot business and had become more active in politics after the political changes of August 5. Investigators are initially considering whether the killing was linked to a business dispute or a conflict over political dominance.

Jashore Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Faruk Ahmed said tension spread in the area after the shooting. Multiple police teams visited the scene, but the motive and identities of the attackers are yet to be determined.

Additional police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order, he added.
