Gulshan police on Sunday detained two men outside the residence of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman after they were spotted behaving suspiciously and taking photographs of the house and the car used by the BNP leader from multiple angles.

The first suspect, Md Ruhul Amin, 46, was arrested at around 10:50am in front of house 196 on North Avenue. Amin identified himself as a resident of Matlab Dakshin in Chandpur. Less than half an hour later, at 11:15am, another man named Md Omar Faruk was apprehended at the same location. Faruk’s identity could not be immediately confirmed, and police are investigating his background.

According to authorities, the Chairperson’s Security Force, responsible for Tarique Rahman’s personal protection, initially intercepted the two men after noticing their suspicious behaviour.

They were then handed over to the police for further investigation.

During a body search, police recovered two pouches of cannabis from the suspects. Officers said the discovery of the substances has added another layer to the investigation, and legal action has been formally initiated against them.

Police are now probing the purpose of their presence near the BNP chief’s residence. “We are looking into whether this was a case of casual curiosity, criminal intent, or something more serious,” an officer said, requesting anonymity. CCTV footage from the area is also being reviewed to determine whether the suspects had been surveilling the residence over an extended period.

Security experts note that high-profile political figures in Dhaka are often targets for surveillance or intimidation, and swift action by personal protection teams is critical. Authorities have assured that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness to prevent any potential security threats.

The incident comes amid heightened political sensitivity in the capital, with police maintaining close monitoring of high-risk areas surrounding the homes of major party leaders.
