Jamaat amir warns of ‘Aug 5 style’ fallout if fascism returns
Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman has issued a sharp warning against what he called any attempt to revive fascism under a new political banner, saying the consequences would mirror the upheaval of August 5.
Speaking at an election rally in Dhaka-15’s Mirpur area on Thursday, Shafiqur said Jamaat would not tolerate the return of authoritarian rule “even in shadow.”
“We do not want to see fascism again in this country,” he declared. “If it reappears in a new guise, the people will respond the same way they did on August 5.”
Targeting corruption and political violence, Rahman urged voters to back leaders who can enforce justice and discipline their own ranks.
“We will stand with those who can stop extortion, land grabbing, harassment, violence, and terror,” he said. “If they cannot control their own people, no matter how beautiful their promises sound, the nation will see through them.”
He also claimed that the fall of what he called “fascist forces” has brought relief to the country, while cautioning against any return to past repression.
“The root of discrimination, misrule, and corruption is the absence of justice,” Shafiqur said, accusing past rulers of looting banks, siphoning public wealth abroad, and using illicit money to fund crime and political terror.
Several political figures and allies attended the rally, including Jamaat leaders and representatives from allied groups, signalling an expanding campaign push as the election race intensifies.
If you want, I can make this more confrontational, more headline-driven, or sharper in tone like a high-impact front-page political report.
