IAB manifesto asserts following Islamic tenets in state governance
Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) on Wednesday unveiled its manifesto for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary elections, placing strong emphasis on adherence to Islamic principles in all aspects of state governance.
The manifesto, announced by party Amir Mufti Syed Rezaul Karim, pir of Charmonai, at a press conference at the party’s central office on February 4, outlines eight key policy points.
Highlighting the core pledges, Mufti Rezaul Karim said the fundamental principles of Islam in governance encompass an independent judiciary, justice, sensitivity to citizens’ interests, accountability, social security and the rule of law.
If voted to power, Islami Andolan Bangladesh will fully uphold these principles, he said.
He also stated that the party aims to build a just, safe, well-governed and equitable Bangladesh through a democratic system in the exercise and transfer of state power.
Islami Andolan Bangladesh, he said, considers all people of the country as citizens with equal rights and dignity, without distinguishing between minority and majority on the basis of religion or ethnicity.
“We are committed to ensuring a safe and harmonious environment for the protection and practice of all religious beliefs,” he said, adding that a special action plan would be taken to preserve the language and culture of small ethnic communities, which are currently under threat.
On foreign policy, the IAB chief said Bangladesh would pursue relations of mutual respect and cooperation with all neighbouring and other countries of the world.
Priority would be given to trade, technology, knowledge and cultural exchange, while no country would be allowed to use Bangladesh’s territory to cause harm to another state, he added.
The manifesto also pledges to establish good governance through transparency and accountability, eliminate discrimination, ensure fairness and root out corruption.
Addressing women’s rights, Mufti Rezaul Karim said Islami Andolan Bangladesh recognises that the current situation of women in the country is problematic and feels a strong sense of responsibility in this regard.
He said necessary steps would be taken, in line with the long-standing values, beliefs and traditions of the land, to ensure the dignity and rights of women.
Rejecting the notion that Sharia and women’s rights are contradictory, he said Islam offers the most effective framework for women’s employment, rights, dignity and freedom. “This commitment will be reflected on every page of our manifesto, Insha’Allah,” he added.
