Amir Hamza fined for election code violations

Amir Hamza, Jamaat-e-Islami nominated candidate for Kushtia-3 constituency, has been fined Tk 10,000 for violating the election code of conduct.

In case of non-payment, he faces six days in prison, three days for each violation.

Joint district and sessions judge M Abdul Hai handed down the verdict on Tuesday. The fine, however, was subsequently paid on behalf of Amir Hamza by his lawyer, Kazi Taufiqul Islam.

The case followed two complaints filed by Rashed Ahmed of Shantidanga village under Kushtia’s Islamic University police station on Sunday.

The complaints alleged that banners promoting Amir Hamza at Majampur Gate lacked the name and address of the printing press and the date of printing, in violation of election regulations.

During the proceedings, Amir Hamza’s lawyer appeared at the site and admitted the oversight.

Rashed Ahmed, the complainant, said that he was satisfied with the ruling but noted that the banners and posters remained in place. He added that the matter had been reported to the returning officer.
