Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman has warned that the people will not remain passive if law enforcement agencies fail to perform their duties properly during the national parliamentary election scheduled for February 12.

He said that if law enforcement agencies do not carry out their responsibilities sincerely, the people will not sit idle. “The people will fulfil their responsibility and ensure a fair vote,” he added.

Shafiqur Rahman made the remarks while speaking to journalists after a meeting of top leaders of the 11-party electoral alliance on Tuesday evening (February 10). He also urged the forces deployed to maintain order during the election to discharge their duties with honesty and neutrality.

The meeting was attended, among others, by Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis amir Maulana Mamunul Haque, National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam, and other senior leaders of the alliance.

The Jamaat amir said, “We do not seek favour from anyone, nor do we want to see favour shown to anyone else. We do not want to see anyone, as in the past, acting as servants of a government republic and taking sides for a particular group. We want everyone to perform their duties from their respective positions with complete neutrality.”

Regarding the meeting, Shafiqur Rahman said, “Today, the top leaders responsible for the 11-party electoral alliance met at the central office of Jamaat-e-Islami. We held detailed discussions about the latest situation in the country. God willing, the national election will be held on the 12th. On that day, there will be two votes: one is a referendum, and the other is for forming the government.”
