A mobile court in Shariatpur has sentenced a Jamaat-e-Islami activist to two years in jail following the seizure of Tk 7.2 lakh during a house search in Naria upazila.

Naria Assistant Commissioner (Land) Lucky Das confirmed the incident on Wednesday evening.

According to mobile court sources, several Jamaat-e-Islami activists had gathered at the residence of party worker Jalil Master in Baishakhipara area of Naria Municipality, carrying bags reportedly containing cash. Acting on the information, Assistant Commissioner Lucky Das arrived at the scene and conducted a search of the house.

During the operation, four Jamaat-e-Islami members were arrested, and authorities recovered Tk 7,20,000 in cash, a laptop, empty envelopes, and several money distribution papers.

Following verification and legal procedures, Golam Mostafa, one of the arrested, was sentenced to two years in prison. The other three individuals were released.

Assistant Commissioner Lucky Das said, “After receiving the news, I immediately went to the location. Some cash was found in a bag, and a judicial magistrate was called to the spot. Upon verification, Tk 7.2 lakh was recovered, and one of the accused was sentenced to two years in prison.”

This action comes as part of a wider effort by authorities to curb illegal financial activities and ensure law and order in the lead-up to national elections.
