A mobile court has sentenced two youths to two years’ imprisonment each for illegally entering a polling station in the capital’s Mirpur at night and attempting to exert influence. 

The convicts are Mehedi Hasan Khadem, 32, and Raihan Hossain, 23.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sara Farzana Haque handed down the sentence on Wednesday, February 11, after they were detained at the Shaheed Smriti High School polling centre in Mirpur. 

Two smartphones were also seized from their possession.

Pallabi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Alamgir Jahan confirmed the matter to Jago News, saying that no political affiliation of the two accused could be established.

According to the police, the youths entered the centre unlawfully and tried to influence the situation inside. In addition to the jail term, they were fined Tk 5,000 each. 

Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional 15 days of rigorous imprisonment.
