Jamaat eyes strong showing, hopes to form next govt
Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed optimism about emerging as the largest party in Thursday’s parliamentary elections and forming the next government.
Speaking at a press conference at the party’s central office, Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair said the party is hopeful of securing the highest number of seats.
“We hope to win the maximum number of seats and form the government, InshaAllah,” he told reporters.
Zubair described the election as “unique in the country’s history” and said the voting process was largely peaceful, with no major incidents reported.
However, he alleged that in several constituencies, Jamaat’s polling agents were prevented from entering centres and faced various forms of physical and mental harassment.
“We immediately informed the authorities about these matters,” he said.
Despite the complaints, the Jamaat leader congratulated citizens for participating in the election and said voters were able to exercise their franchise in an overall orderly environment.
“Now we are waiting to see whether the results reflect a beautiful and peaceful outcome,” he added.
The remarks came as counting of votes got underway following the day-long polling across the country, with political parties closely watching results that will determine the composition of the next parliament.
