Ibn Sina staffer jailed for distributing cash for Jamaat candidate

A mobile court in Gazipur has sentenced an employee of Ibn Sina Pharmaceuticals to two years in prison for distributing money on behalf of a Jamaat-e-Islami candidate ahead of the parliamentary election.

The sentence was handed down on Thursday, February 12, by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of Gazipur, Md Asaduzzaman.

The convicted individual, Shamimul Islam, 35, is the son of Mojibur Rahman of Kurigram Sadar upazila. 

According to authorities, he works at the Safipur plant of Ibn Sina Pharmaceuticals in Kaliakair.

Mobile court sources said that around 12:30 am on Wednesday, February 11, Shamimul was allegedly distributing cash among voters in the Matikata area of Kaliakair. 

Local residents detained him and later handed him over to the police.

During the incident, law enforcers recovered Tk 60,000 in cash from his possession.

Shamimul pleaded guilty before the court and was subsequently sentenced to two years’ imprisonment along with a fine of Tk 1,000.

Kaliakair Upazila Executive Officer and Assistant Returning Officer AHM Fakhrul Hossain confirmed the matter.

Authorities said the action was taken as part of efforts to prevent electoral misconduct and ensure a fair voting process.
