Modi talks to Tarique, iterates India’s support
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman on Friday, congratulating him on the party’s electoral victory and reaffirming New Delhi’s support for Bangladesh’s future political journey.
In a statement shared after the call, Modi said he was “delighted” to speak with Tarique and extended congratulations on what he described as a remarkable win in the national election. The Indian leader also conveyed his best wishes, expressing hope that the new leadership would work to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh.
Highlighting the broader bilateral relationship, Modi noted that India and Bangladesh remain close neighbours with deep historical and cultural ties. He reiterated India’s continued commitment to the peace, progress and prosperity of both nations.
The phone call comes at a time when Dhaka is preparing for the formation of a new government following the recently concluded parliamentary polls. Diplomatic observers say the conversation signals New Delhi’s early outreach to the incoming political leadership, underscoring the importance India places on maintaining stable relations with its eastern neighbour.
