Jamaat in high-stakes executive council meeting after poll setback

Facing disappointing results in the 13th national parliamentary elections, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami convened an emergency meeting of its Central Executive Council on Friday evening, signalling growing internal pressure within the party over its electoral performance and post-poll developments.

The closed-door meeting began at the party’s central office at 5:00 pm under the chairmanship of its amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman. Senior leaders gathered to review what insiders described as “serious organisational and electoral concerns” following the vote.

Party sources said the agenda included discussions on alleged vote rigging at several polling centres, claimed errors in result processing, and accusations of election engineering. Leaders were also expected to assess reports of attacks on party activists across different districts after the polls.

The meeting comes amid heightened rhetoric from Jamaat’s top leadership.

Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar recently questioned the accuracy of unofficial election and referendum results, alleging inconsistencies that he said could undermine the credibility of the outcome.

According to party insiders, leaders are weighing legal options, including seeking a recount in constituencies where they believe irregularities may have affected results.

Parwar earlier indicated that the party would move for a recount if legal grounds were established.
