Shamikul Islam Sarkar Lipon, 57, president of the Palashbari upazila unit Awami League, has died after falling critically ill in Gaibandha Central jail early Sunday, February 15.

He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Lipon, the son of Abdul Zobbar Sarkar from Bairi Harinmari village in Palashbari Municipality, had long been a prominent local political figure.

Gaibandha Central Jail official Atikur Rahman said that Lipon complained of chest pain at around 11:00 pm on Saturday night.

He was initially taken to Gaibandha General Hospital, but as his condition worsened, he was transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his illness.

Earlier, police arrested him from Dhaka on December 8, 2024, and he was later sent to jail by court order.

He had been suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, and other serious health issues.
