Nahid calls for impeaching Shahabuddin

The opposition chief whip in the 13th parliament, Nahid Islam, has demanded the arrest of President Mohammed Shahbuddin after impeaching him for not taking effective measures to prevent the massacre during the July uprising in 2024.

The National Citizen Party (NCP) convener made the demand after visiting the Pilkhana massacre martyrs at Banani Military Graveyard on Wednesday afternoon, February 25.

Nahid said taking the initiative to impeach the President should be one of the main tasks in the first session of the new parliament. The ruling party and the opposition must work together in this regard, he stressed.

The President could not be removed after the July uprising as the political parties could not reach a consensus, and despite people's demands for a new President during the interim government's tenure, he was kept in the post for the sake of stabilising the country and protecting the constitution, he stated.

"Now it is just a matter of time as the new government takes charge. We are waiting for this," Nahid added.

Noting that the President, as the state's guardian, was silent during the July killings, the lawmaker said, "The July massacre occurred for his silent role. Now it is time to remove him by impeachment and arrest him."
