Voting underway in BCB election
Voting is underway for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Board of Directors election. The voting, which began at 10:00 am at a five-star hotel in the capital, will continue until 4:00 pm.
According to the schedule, the names of the winning candidates for the director positions will be announced by 6:00 pm. The election for the president and vice-president will follow at 7:30 pm.
A significant number of candidates from Categories 1, 2, and 3 are not participating, having withdrawn their nominations. Several heavyweight candidates have boycotted the election. The boycott candidates had initially submitted a request to the sports adviser to cancel the election, along with three proposals.
Earlier, following a court directive, elections for 15 clubs were stayed, reducing the voting council from 76 to 61 clubs. However, the court later lifted the stay on those 15 clubs, allowing all 76 club councillors to vote. Candidates who have already withdrawn or canceled their nominations cannot contest but remain eligible to vote.
The withdrawal of 15 candidates, including Tamim Iqbal, Fahim Sinha, and Rafiqul Islam Babu, has reduced the excitement and competition in the Dhaka club quota, Category-2. Nevertheless, 17 candidates are contesting for 12 seats in Category-2 for Dhaka clubs.
For Category-1, which includes district and division-level positions, 10 directors will be elected through 72 votes. Meanwhile, 8 candidates have already been elected unopposed. As a result, voting on Monday will only take place in the Rangpur division for Category-1, while no elections will be held in the other six divisions: Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Barishal.
The following candidates are set to be elected unopposed in five divisions:
Dhaka Division: Aminul Islam Bulbul, Nazmul Abedin Fahim
Chattogram Division: Ahsan Iqbal Chowdhury, Asif Akbar
Khulna Division: Abdur Razzak, Zulfikar Ali Khan
Sylhet Division: Rahat Shams
Barishal Division: Shakhawat Hossain
