After winning a gold medal at the 2016 South Asian (SA) Games, Mabia Akter became emotional while saluting during the national anthem, draped in the national flag. That image later turned into a source of inspiration for sports enthusiasts and athletes across the country. However, the star weightlifter has now been banned for two years after testing positive in a doping test.

Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) President Jobaidur Rahman Rana confirmed the matter to Jago News.

The issue is linked to the Islamic Solidarity Games held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in October last year. Prior to participating in the event, Mabia submitted her sample at the BOA office. Test results later revealed the presence of banned substances—‘Furosemide’ and ‘Canrenone’—in her body, both of which are used to remove excess water.

Based on a report by the South Asia Anti-Doping Organisation, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) sent her a letter last Thursday imposing a two-year ban.

When asked whether there was an opportunity to appeal against the punishment, the BOA president told Jago News, “An appeal has already been made. Since she admitted it, the punishment was reduced. Mabia took the medication as per prescription. However, not all prescribed medicines are allowed. Approval must be obtained from WADA before taking such medication.”

Attempts to contact Mabia for comment were unsuccessful, as she could not be reached by phone.

Notably, Mabia, who began her journey with the national team in 2012, has achieved significant success at the international level. Her achievements include five gold medals, notably winning gold in back-to-back SA Games in 2016 and 2019.
