BSCPLC surpasses 3 TBps in int’l bandwidth, boosting internet quality

Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC (BSCPC) achieved a milestone on April 28, 2025, crossing 3.00 terabytes per second (TBps) in international bandwidth transport for the first time, with real-time internet traffic reaching 3.34 TBps.

Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on ICT, announced this on Tuesday.

The company projects this will rise to 3.46 TBps by the end of April, reflecting a 1.10 TBps increase over the past eight months.

Previously, during the Awami League tenure, over 65 per cebt of BSCPLC’s capacity remained unused. This turnaround is attributed to policy support from the Department of Posts and Telecommunications, proactive management, and multiple price reductions. The increased bandwidth usage has also significantly boosted BSCPLC’s revenue.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) recently mandated that all International Internet Gateway (IIG) operators source at least 50 per cent of their bandwidth from submarine cables. To further incentivise this shift, BSCL plans to offer additional discounts to IIG operators exceeding this threshold, with implementation expected soon. The company also intends to introduce specialised internet packages for data centres, cloud providers, and hyperscalers, beyond existing bulk discounts.

This surge in submarine bandwidth usage promises to enhance internet quality in Bangladesh, which has lagged behind global standards.
