Ctg port operations normal, chairman warns against disruptions

Chittagong port Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman has assured that operations are running normally despite an indefinite strike and warned that any attempts to create unrest at the port will face legal action.

Speaking to reporters outside the port office on Sunday, February 8, he said that workers and staff have resumed their duties. Earlier, he held a two-hour closed-door meeting with officials and employees starting at 10:00 am.

Addressing concerns over the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) lease, he said the process is following proper procedures and is not being rushed.

“The appointment of a foreign operator for NCT began in 2019. Agreements with foreign investors for the Bay Terminal and Laldia Container Terminal have already been signed. A writ petition regarding the NCT lease is currently pending in the High Court. Some groups staged a march claiming the lease is being hurriedly granted, but the process is lengthy and procedural,” he explained.

Moniruzzaman also highlighted the upcoming 13th Parliamentary Election, scheduled to be held on 12 February. “I cast my postal vote this morning and urged officials and staff to do the same. Some groups are attempting to disrupt the election by creating unrest at the port. The election must not be obstructed under any circumstances,” he said.

He further warned that with Ramadan approaching, attempts to create artificial crises could affect commodity prices in the market.
