Students of all departments at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet have decided to boycott classes and examinations, demanding elections to the Central Students’ Union.

The university has a total of 28 departments. From Tuesday night (January 20), students began issuing separate statements announcing the boycott. Students of the Economics Department were the last to join the protest, releasing their statement late at night.

Several social, cultural, voluntary, and regional organisations at the university have also issued statements condemning and protesting the suspension of the Shahjalal University Central Students’ Union (SUCSU) elections, which were scheduled to be held on Tuesday (January 20).

Meanwhile, following a day-long sit-in programme on Tuesday, protesting students brought out a procession on campus in the evening. After the march, at a rally held around 8:15pm, movement leaders called on students of all departments to boycott classes and examinations.

The protesting students are expected to announce their next course of action after taking a final decision on the ongoing SUCSU movement at a press conference scheduled for Wednesday at 12 noon.
