Delhi ‘examines’ Dhaka’s request for Hasina's extradition
India is reviewing a formal request from Bangladesh to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed on Wednesday.
The request was first submitted in December and reiterated earlier this month, following Hasina’s death sentence in Bangladesh for her alleged role in last year’s killing of student protesters. The case has sparked widespread debate and political tension in the region.
Jaiswal said the matter is currently under consideration within India’s legal and judicial framework.
“Yes, we have received that request, and the request is being examined,” he told reporters. “We remain committed to the people of Bangladesh. We will continue to engage constructively in this regard with all stakeholders.”
Sheikh Hasina fled to India in August 2024 amid mass protests and political turmoil in Dhaka. Her current status in India remains officially undisclosed.
Further developments are expected as both governments continue discussions over the high-profile extradition request.
