Body-shaming sermon Rumeen seeks action against MP Hamza in parliament
Rumeen Farhana, independent MP from Brahmanbaria-2, demanded legal action against Amir Hamza, Jamaat-e-Islami MP from Kushtia-3, accusing him of using “ugly and vulgar language” targeting her and another female colleague.
Raising the issue on a point of order in Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday, Rumeen called on the Speaker to ensure accountability.
“I would like to draw your attention to a news report published today. A male MP made offensive and indecent remarks in a sermon about me and another female MP. I demand justice,” she said, without naming the accused directly on the floor.
However, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said that a point of order cannot be raised based on newspaper reports, indicating procedural limitations in addressing the matter immediately.
The controversy intensified after a video clip went viral on social media, allegedly showing Amir Hamza making offensive and inappropriate comments about two female lawmakers during a waz mahfil.
The remarks have drawn widespread criticism online, with many condemning the use of misogynistic and degrading language by an elected representative.
