Hungary offers assistance to reduce arsenic pollution

Hungary today offered technical assistance to reduce arsenic pollution in potable waters in Bangladesh and pledged financial assistance for implementation of a pilot project to this end.

The offer of assistance came at the first ever Bangladesh-Hungary Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) held in the State Guest House Meghna in the city.

In the consultations, Bangladesh and Hungary agreed to enhance cooperation in the field of education, culture, water resources management, agriculture and ICT sectors.

Mohammad Khorshed A. Khastagir, Director General, Europe Wing, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Dr. S ndor Sipos, Director General for Asia Pacific, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, led their respective delegations to the meeting.

Representatives of education, commerce, water resources, agriculture, cultural affairs, Bangladesh Water Development Board, Water Resources Planning Organization (WRPO) and BIDA were present in the meeting.

The consultations involved a productive exchange on political and bilateral issues, economic and current global issues.

The two sides also agreed to finalize the draft framework Agreement on Educational, Scientific and Cultural Cooperation at the earliest to facilitate 100 scholarships to be offered by Hungarian government to Bangladeshi students for higher studies in Hungarian institutions.

They expressed satisfaction at the formation of the Joint Agricultural Working Group (JAWG) and designation of respective national focal points for implementation of the MOU on water resources management.

The next FOC between the two countries will take place in Budapest, Hungary in 2018.
