Election office torched in Lakshmipur
Miscreants set fire to the Lakshmipur district election office in the early hours of Saturday, December 13.
The incident occurred in the store room on the ground floor around 4:00 am.
CCTV footage showed a young man in a mask entering the office by scaling the wall. Soon after his departure, smoke is shown rising there.
Sadar Upazila Election Officer Md Faruque Hossain said a youth set fire to the office by pouring petrol and fled when the caretaker sensed his presence.
Shortly after the incident, the fire was extinguished, he said, adding that the blaze destroyed voter registration forms of 2008 and 2009 and some materials.
Some documents were burnt in the fire, and no major damage was reported as the fire was put out quickly, said the district election officer, Md Abdur Rashid.
Deputy Commissioner SM Mehidy Hasan said a direction has been given to strengthen security at the district's election offices.
