Polls to Bandarban’s 3 upazilas suspended

The Election Commission has suspended the polls for three upazilas in Bandarban as the joint operation is underway there.

Election Commission (EC) Secretary Md Jahangir Alam told reporters after an inter-ministry meeting on Tuesday morning.

The EC Secretary said the law-enforcement agencies are discharging their duties in Thanchi, Ruma and Rowangchhari upazilas in Bandarban. For this reason, the polls to three upazilas have been suspended. The polls will be held in these upazilas at a convenient time.

The inter-ministry meeting on the upazila polls was held at Nirbachan Bhaban with Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal in the chair.

Four Election Commissioners and top officials of the Public Security Division, Public Administration, police, BGB, RAB and different ministries were present during this time.

The EC Secretary said the concerned officials related to the law-enforcement agencies and administration have been directed to work cooperatively.

Notably, the polls to the three upazilas were scheduled to be held in May.
