Sportswoman rape: Ju-Jitsu Association GS Newton remanded

A court in Dhaka has put Bangladesh Ju-Jitsu Association General Secretary Dr Md Rafiqul Islam Newton and his associate, a woman, on a day remand in a case filed over the alleged rape of a sportswoman.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim passed the order on Sunday after police had produced them before the court, seeking a five-day remand for fair investigation.

On May 14, the female athlete filed the case against Ju-Jitsu Association General Secretary Newton under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, and the Pornography Control Act.

Following the case filing, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested him and his associate in drives in Shah Ali and Mirpur areas of the capital on Saturday.

The case statement said Newton in association with the arrested woman, also a player, would sexually harass other female players and forcefully develop physical relationships with them by false promise and intimidation.

The plaintiff had been receiving Ju-Jitsu training under Newton for the last two years. During the training, he would physically abuse her on various pretexts.

One day, the arrested woman confined the accuser in the dress changing room of the association and called Newton there. Later, he raped her and the accused woman took naked photos of her.

Subsequently, Newton raped the victim multiple times at a flat in the capital by threatening to spread the photos on social media platforms.
