Election eligibility to depend on reform commission report: CEC

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), AMM Nasir Uddin, has stated that the decision on who can participate in the elections will depend on the report of the Reform Commission.

He made this remark on Saturday morning during a meeting with election officials at the Sylhet Circuit House to discuss voter list updates and preparations for the 13th National Parliament election.

The CEC explained that after receiving the report from the Reform Commission, the Election Commission will devise a new plan regarding the registration of political parties. The decision on who will be eligible to participate in the election will be based on this plan.

He also noted that implementing local government elections before the upcoming national elections would be challenging, as local government elections involve multiple stages, making it nearly impossible to complete them within a short time frame.

The CEC further mentioned that individuals involved in financial corruption related to voter ID card corrections would be brought to justice. Additionally, he confirmed that the process of registering overseas Bangladeshis as voters is ongoing.

The meeting at the Sylhet Circuit House was chaired by Mohammad Nurul Alam, the Regional Election Officer of Sylhet.
