Former National Board of Revenue (NBR) official Matiur Rahman and his first wife, Laila Kaniz, a former upazila chairman, were arrested on Tuesday night.

A team of detectives arrested them following a raid in the Bashundhara Residential Area of Dhaka, according to Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media and public relations) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

The next legal actions are underway, he said.

Earlier, on January 6 this year, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed three additional cases against Matiur Rahman, his first wife Laila Kaniz, his son, and daughter on charges of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk 126 crore and concealing information about their assets.

On December 15 of the previous year, the ACC filed two cases against Matiur and his second wife, Shammi Akhter Shibli, accusing them of amassing illegal assets worth Tk 111.8 million.

It is noteworthy that Matiur gained public attention after a controversial incident last year involving his other son, Mushfiqur Rahman Ifat, who was involved in purchasing high-value goats, which attracted both public and legal scrutiny.
