Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin has iterated his commitment to impartiality, emphasising that his role is to facilitate free and fair elections rather than engage in politics.

"We don't want to get into politics. Our focus is on staying within the boundaries of laws, rules, and regulations to ensure a fair playing field where all participants can compete freely," the CEC said at a ceremony on Sunday (January 19). The event marked the handover of laptops, scanners, and other equipment by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support voter list updates.

UNDP support for electoral reforms

Praising the UNDP's swift assistance, Nasir Uddin said, "The UNDP has been a historical development partner for Bangladesh. When I sought their help in December for voter list updates and electoral process improvements, they responded promptly. Today, they have provided essential equipment, including laptops, scanners, and cameras, which will be instrumental in the upcoming national elections."

The voter list update, scheduled to begin on January 20, will involve significant logistical efforts, with UNDP supplying hundreds of devices. The CEC expressed hope that additional resources would follow, supporting a smooth and reliable voter registration process.

The CEC acknowledged existing doubts about the voter list and outlined measures to address them. "We will begin fieldwork tomorrow (Monday) to update the voter list and aim to complete this process within six months. With a voter growth rate of 1.55 per cent, approximately 65,000 personnel will work tirelessly to ensure accuracy and transparency."

Door-to-door voter registration efforts are part of the initiative, aiming to build trust and eliminate any uncertainties about the process. "This comprehensive program reflects our determination to uphold credibility and transparency in the election process. InshaAllah, all doubts will be removed," he added.

Preparing for the general elections

The CEC also mentioned the arrival of a UNDP need assessment team to provide further assistance in the national elections. "We understand their areas of support and are working to ensure the required resources and mechanisms are in place for a smooth electoral process," he noted.

Nasir Uddin reaffirmed the Election Commission's commitment to fostering public confidence in the electoral system. "Our objective is a transparent and inclusive election that upholds the democratic aspirations of the people," he concluded.
