Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Appellate Division Judge Abdur Rouf has passed away. He breathed his last at Insaf Al Baraka Hospital in Moghbazar, Dhaka, around 9:50 am on Sunday.

Md Ruhul Amin, Personal Secretary to the Attorney General, confirmed the death to reporters, stating that Abdur Rouf underwent heart surgery at United Hospital on January 5. Due to a low heart rate, a pacemaker was implanted in his heart.

Abdur Rouf served as CEC from 1990 to 1995. He was also the Chairman of the National Anti-Corruption Coordination Committee, the President of the national children’s organization Phulkuri, and the Shariah Adviser for Far East Islami Life Insurance and Prime Islami Life Insurance.

Born on February 1, 1934, Abdur Rouf began his career as an advocate and later became an additional judge in the High Court Division. He was subsequently appointed as a judge in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. Later, the then-President of Bangladesh appointed him as Chief Election Commissioner.
