2 lynched on suspicion of robbery in Ctg

Two people were lynched on suspicion of robbery in Satkania, Chattogram on Monday night. Four others were injured by gunshots in the incident.

The deceased have been identified as Nezam Uddin, 46, and Abu Salek, 38, both from Kanchana union in the upazila. The injured individuals are Obaidul Haque, 22, Mamunur Rashid, 45, Nasir Uddin, 38, and Abbas Uddin, 38.

The incident took place in the Chonkhola Westpara area of Eochia Union. Police later recovered a pistol, eight bullet casings, and an auto-rickshaw from the scene.

Following the incident, Chattogram District Police Superintendent Saiful Islam visited the scene. However, attempts to contact him on Tuesday morning went unanswered.

Satkania Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Jahedul Islam, confirmed that two people had been killed in Chonkhola village, Eochia Union, and that four to five others were injured by gunshots. The OC added, “The political affiliations of the victims and the injured are yet to be confirmed. However, two individuals who arrived at the scene were killed, and the others who were injured are local residents. The cause of the incident is still unclear, and police are investigating.”

According to police and local residents, a group of youths arrived in an auto-rickshaw in Chonkhola Paschimpara between 9:30 and 10:00 pm on Monday night and began firing indiscriminately. At the same time, a loudspeaker announcement from the local mosque stated that robbers had arrived. This led to villagers gathering at the scene and capturing two of the youths from the auto-rickshaw, who were severely beaten. Both died at the scene. Police later recovered a pistol near one of the bodies.

However, some locals have accused Nazrul Islam Manik, a member of the Satkania Upazila Awami League, of being responsible for the incident. Local resident Kamal Uddin claimed that after receiving news of Manik’s presence in the area, a group of people went to the location. At that time, Manik’s associates made an announcement over the mosque loudspeaker, alleging that robbers had entered the area, which stirred up the locals and led to the violent attack. Ultimately, Nezam Uddin and Abu Salek were captured and beaten to death.
