Man gets death penalty for killing teen girl after rape

A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to death for killing a teenage girl after rape in Dohar upazila, Dhaka. The court also fined him Tk 2 lakh. As the accused is absconding, the court has issued an arrest warrant along with a warrant for his sentence.

The convict, Ziaur Rahman, is the son of Sheikh Sona Mia from Banaghata village in the upazila. 

The judge of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 (Senior District and Sessions Judge) Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman announced this verdict On Tuesday (March 18). The court has also ordered the Dhaka District Magistrate to recover the fine by selling the accused's movable or immovable property and hand it over to the victim and her family.

Ershad Alam George, the Public Prosecutor of the concerned court, expressed satisfaction with the verdict, stating, "We are satisfied with the verdict. Justice has been established through this verdict. We hope the convict will be arrested soon and his death sentence will be executed."

According to the case statement, on October 21, 2018, at around 9:00 am, the victim went to a field next to her house to fetch vegetables. While returning with the vegetables around 9:45 am, the accused Ziaur Rahman forcibly took the victim to a nearby field, raped her, and then slit her throat with a sharp knife, killing her. He then fled the scene, leaving the body there. The victim's father filed a case with Dohar police station in connection with the incident.

On March 12, 2019, the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Syed Mehdi Hasan of the concerned police station, submitted a charge sheet against the accused. Subsequently, the court framed charges against the accused and ordered the commencement of the trial. During the trial, the court recorded the testimony of 18 witnesses.
