Doctor-pharma nexus faces ethical criticism: BMU VC
Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Shahinul Alam highlighted concerns about the relationship between doctors and pharmaceutical companies, emphasising the need for ethical standards in the medical profession.
Speaking at the ‘Master Class on Adolescent Endocrinology’ during the Second International Scientific Conference of the Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology Society of Bangladesh on May 29 at BMU’s Shaheed Dr Milon Hall, he addressed the ethical challenges in this nexus.
Professor Alam stressed that both doctors and pharmaceutical companies must uphold ethical boundaries. “Doctors must prioritise patient welfare and uphold the dignity of the medical profession, ensuring no actions compromise transparency or patient interests,” he said.
He urged pharmaceutical companies to maintain integrity in their marketing strategies to foster a credible and humane healthcare system built on mutual cooperation, with patient welfare and quality care as top priorities.
Professor Alam highlighted the role of medical audits in improving healthcare quality. “Medical audits are critical for elevating service standards but are often overlooked. Greater awareness and proactive efforts are needed to achieve desired improvements in medical services,” he concluded.
The vice-chancellor also emphasised the importance of evidence-based medicine in modern healthcare. “Promoting evidence-based practices can significantly enhance medical care and protect patient interests,” he noted. He called for initiatives to reduce patient costs through such practices.
