CU student drowns in Cox’s Bazar, 2 others missing

A student of Chittagong University (CU) drowned in the sea at Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday morning, while two others remain missing.

The incident was confirmed by Cox’s Bazar Tourist Police Inspector (Unarmed), Gazi Ataur Rahman.

The deceased was identified as K M Sadman Rahman Sabab, son of K M Anisur Rahman from Mirpur, Dhaka. The missing students are Aritra Hasan and Asif Ahmed, both from Bogura. All three were residents of Shaheed Md Forhad Hossain Hall at Chittagong University.

According to sources, four first-year students from the Development Studies department (academic year 2023–24) had gone to visit the sea beach in Cox’s Bazar. On Tuesday morning, three of them entered the water at Himchari Beach and were swept away by strong currents. Later, locals recovered the body of one student, while the remaining two are still unaccounted for.

CU Assistant Proctor and Development Studies Professor, Dr Sayeed Bin Kamal Chowdhury, said: “Four first-year students went to Cox’s Bazar last night. One of their bodies has been recovered by local fishermen, and the other two are still missing. We’ve contacted local police and informed the families. A group of faculty members, including myself, are heading to Cox’s Bazar.”
