5 die after ‘consuming liquor’ in Khulna
Five people have died after reportedly falling ill from consuming liquor in the Boyra Sherer Mor area under Sonadanga Police Station in Khulna.
Md Mizanur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Sonadanga Police Station, said the victims were brought to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) from the Boyra area on Saturday evening (July 19), where they died one after another.
According to KMCH sources, the hospital register listed “poisoning” as the cause of death.
The deceased have been identified as Babu (50), son of Abdur Rob from Boyra Sherer Mor; Sabu (60), son of Abdus Samad from Boyra Modhyopara in Khalishpur; Goutam Kumar Biswas (47), son of Kalipad from Junction Road in Khalishpur; Tota (60) from Khalishpur; and Azeebor (45) from Boyra.
OC Mizanur Rahman said it is initially suspected that the deaths occurred due to consumption of locally brewed liquor. The bodies of Sabu and Babu have been sent to the KMCH morgue for autopsy. An investigation is underway, and further details will be disclosed upon its completion.
Md Mizanur Rahman, Deputy Director of the Department of Narcotics Control in Khulna, said they have been informed about the incident. "No details can be confirmed without a proper investigation," he added.
