Ex-minister Kamrul on 5-day remand in murder case
A Dhaka court has granted a five-day remand for former Food Minister Advocate Kamrul Islam in connection with the murder of jute trader Md Monir during the July mass uprising in Chankharpul, Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadikur Rahman passed the order following a hearing on Wednesday (24 September).
During the hearing, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Mainul Islam Khan Pulok of Shahbagh Police Station, sought a 10-day remand for Kamrul Islam, who was present in court. The prosecution was represented by Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon. Kamrul Islam’s lawyer, Aftab Ahmed, applied for bail and requested the cancellation of the remand. After hearing both sides, the court granted a five-day remand.
Kamrul Islam was arrested on the night of 18 November last year from Sector-12, Uttara, by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Since then, he has remained in custody following several remand orders.
According to case details, during the July mass uprising last year, on 5 August, jute trader Md Monir joined protests in Chandkharpul under Shahbagh police station. He was shot dead on the spot by bullets fired by the accused. Monir’s wife, Rozina Akter, filed the murder case with the police station on 14 March. The case lists 351 known accused and 500 unidentified accused, with Kamrul Islam named as the seventh known accused.
