Tongi fire death toll rises to 3 as another victim dies

A shop employee, who was injured in a chemical warehouse fire in Gazipur's Tongi, passed away in a hospital in Dhaka on Friday morning, September 26.

The victim, Al Amin Babu, 23, worked at a shop at Sahara Market in Tongi, and son of Ratan Hawladar from Kurigram's Rowmari.

Babu died at about 11:00am while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital's Burn Unit, said the hospital police outpost in-charge inspector Md Faruque.

Around 95 per cent of his body was burnt, the police official said.

Earlier, two firefighters – Shamim Ahmed and Nurul Huda – who were also injured in the fire, succumbed to their injuries.

On Monday, September 22, the fire erupted at a chemical warehouse beside Sahara Super Market in Gazipur's Tongi.

Four fire service personnel and three workers sustained burn injuries while trying to douse the blaze.

Of the injured, six were first taken to Tongi Government Hospital and later, they were rushed to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital as their condition deteriorated.
