Dhaka takes note of Indian concern on Zakir Naik’s possible tour

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday said it has taken note of India’s concern regarding the possible visit of controversial religious preacher Zakir Naik to Bangladesh.

“We have taken note of the remarks made by the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs of India regarding the possible visit of a prominent Islamic scholar or cleric to Bangladesh,” said S M Mahbubul Alam, spokesperson of the foreign ministry, while speaking to BSS.

In an opaque reference to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India,  Mahbubul Alam added, “We also believe that no country, including India, should provide shelter to any accused or fugitive individuals from another country.”

Naik, an Indian-born preacher currently based in Malaysia, faces money laundering and hate speech charges in India. Reports of his potential invitation to Bangladesh have drawn attention in both Dhaka and New Delhi, prompting the Indian Ministry of External Affairs to comment earlier this week.

Officials in Dhaka, however, have not confirmed any plans for Naik’s visit.
