Another 170 Bangladeshis brought back from Libya
Another 170 Bangladeshi nationals were brought back from Libya on Tuesday, arriving in Dhaka at 6:10 am on a Burak Air chartered flight, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The repatriation was coordinated by the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The returnees had been staying in Libya illegally, many of them having travelled there in hopes of reaching Europe through irregular routes facilitated by human traffickers. Several reported experiencing abduction and abuse during their time in the country.
Officials from the foreign ministry and the IOM received the returnees at the airport and urged them to share their experiences to help raise public awareness.
Each returnee received travel allowances, food supplies, basic medical care, and temporary shelter from the IOM.
The joint efforts of the foreign ministry, the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the expatriates’ welfare ministry, and the IOM continue to ensure the safe repatriation of Bangladeshis detained in various centres across Libya.
