Yunus assures rehabilitation support for Korail fire victims
Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus has expressed deep concern and condolences over the devastating fire in Dhaka’s Korail slum. He prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured and assured that the government would provide necessary support for the rehabilitation of those affected.
In a message on Tuesday night (25 November), the Chief Adviser said the suffering of families rendered homeless by the Korail slum fire is a matter of shared sorrow for all. He added that the government would ensure all necessary assistance for the rehabilitation of the victims.
He also stated that relevant authorities have been instructed to intensify rescue and relief operations immediately. Additionally, an investigation into the cause of the fire has been ordered, and measures have been directed to prevent such incidents in the future.
Earlier on Tuesday (25 November) at 5:22 pm, the fire service received news of the blaze in Korail slum. Upon receiving the report, 11 units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence were dispatched to the scene.
The fire was brought under control after more than five hours of effort by 19 units of the Fire Service. According to Lt. Colonel Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury, Director of Operations and Maintenance at the Fire Service, nearly 1,500 shanties in the slum were destroyed in the fire.
